Vanessa Allen Sutherland serves as Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary for Phillips 66.
In this role, Vanessa leads and manages the legal department, global compliance, government affairs.
Prior to Phillips 66, Allen Sutherland served as Executive Vice President and Chief Legal Officer for Norfolk Southern Corporation.
During her tenure at Norfolk Southern, Allen Sutherland helped lead a review of the company’s safety program, managed government relations initiatives, introduced automation at multiple levels within the law team, and collaborated with industry peers on matters related to short line railroads.
Prior to joining Norfolk Southern, Allen Sutherland served as chief executive officer and chairperson of the U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board in Washington, D.C. Previously, she served as chief counsel with the U.S. Department of Transportation, Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration; counsel and senior counsel with Philip Morris USA; and corporate counsel, senior corporate counsel, and vice president, deputy general counsel with Digex Inc.
Allen Sutherland holds an undergraduate degree from Drew University and a Juris Doctor and an MBA from American University.
