Tequila Smith is the Executive Vice President and Chief Sustainability Officer for Covanta, a leader in sustainable materials management and a premier provider of environmental solutions benefiting businesses and communities across North America.
In this role, Tequila leads the design, implementation and measurement of both internal and external sustainability impact programs that address overall sustainability, environmental justice, government/regulatory affairs and community engagement strategy.
Tequila has extensive operations and external affairs experience working at Southern Company, Alabama Power, and Georgia Power for almost 25 years. Her background includes hands-on senior leadership involvement in helping industrial companies engage on issues of sustainability at both corporate and community levels. She served as Vice President of Sustainability for Georgia Power, one of the nation’s largest generators of electricity.
Tequila is a member of the Board of Directors for Sunbelt Solomon and an advisory board member of Stonehenge Capital Community Development.
Tequila earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering and MBA from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She also holds an M.A. in Communication Studies from the University of Alabama.
