H. Patrick Swygert is President Emeritus and Emeritus Professor of Law at Howard University in Washington, D.C. Swygert was President of Howard University from August 1995 until his retirement in June 2008. Prior to that position, Swygert was President of the University of Albany, State University of New York from 1990 to 1995.
Swygert is widely recognized in academic circles because of the results he generated. Swygert led the academic and financial revitalization of both institutions, gaining experience in strategic planning, risk management and governance. Swygert’s diverse leadership roles provide him with a unique perspective on civic and cultural issues.
Swygert is on the Advisory Council for the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of African American History and Culture and on the Board of Trustees of the Eisenhower Fellowships. Swygert is a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity.
Swygert holds a Bachelor’s degree from Howard University and a Juris Doctor from Howard University Law School.
