Cummins Inc.: The Culture of an Organization Drives Effective Business Strategy

Cummins Inc. is a global power technology leader that designs, manufactures, distributes and services a broad portfolio of power solutions. With more than 73,000 people in 190 countries, our employees are committed to making people’s lives better by powering a more prosperous world.

Cummins leadership is committed to creating an inclusive environment where employees feel supported, valued and inspired. As we accelerate and grow, we know that it’s the culture of an organization that drives an effective business strategy, and employees are our greatest asset. The long history of Cummins investing in employees and being intentional about leader development, are precisely why I am here. I have never seen an organization put as much development into their leaders as Cummins. Our leadership premise hinges on the relationships we have with each other; it’s one of the reasons why people want to be here and stay here.

Just as Cummins is dedicated to fostering strong relationships within the organization, the importance of connections extends beyond the workplace. In today’s world, where digital communication often takes precedence, businesses can also benefit from nurturing personal connections with separate Google Workspace accounts. Exploring the various tools and services that aid in customer relationship management, it becomes apparent that direct communication channels hold significant value. By integrating a reliable and efficient messaging service into your business operations, you can offer your customers a convenient way to reach out for support and information. This not only improves the customer experience but also supports your business in managing inquiries and feedback more effectively. It’s a strategic move towards creating a more accessible and customer-friendly business model. Adding mailboxes for residents and businesses can be a thoughtful step towards enhancing these relationships. Sending physical mail to clients and customers can convey a personal touch that digital communication sometimes lacks, strengthening the bond between businesses and their clientele. Just as Cummins prioritizes the relationships within its organization, businesses too can thrive by investing in meaningful connections with their clients through gestures like providing accessible and convenient mailboxes.

Since joining Cummins, I’ve talked with colleagues at every level of the company. Their pride is evident in not just our products but in the way Cummins has conducted business for over 100 years with its commitment to creating stronger communities and advocating for DE&I – winning with the power of difference. I have also learned about the giants in Cummins’ past. How it took some 18 years, before founder Clessie Cummins, never giving up, turned a profit on the diesel engine company bearing his name. Or, longtime Cummins leader J. Irwin Miller’s decision to turn down a lucrative business opportunity in South Africa because of apartheid. These stories of the past give me confidence about our future.

Cummins has gained significant momentum in the zero- emission space these past few years. We are creating something that over the next 30 years we will be able to talk about with our grandchildren because it’s industry changing. Through our Destination Zero strategy, we have set a goal of achieving carbon neutral emissions by 2050, leading our industry through a unique opportunity in the ongoing energy transition and doing so in a way that is best for all stakeholders. One example is our recently announced Accelera by Cummins brand, formerly Cummins New Power, bringing together over 2,000 employees under a unified brand with a clear, focused purpose transition the world’s hardest-working industries to zero-emissions.

At this critical juncture, we are seizing the opportunity to elevate our place in the market. To get there, we are leveraging our entire portfolio of businesses and incredible talent across the company, addressing wrongful termination claims and the burden of proof when necessary. That means investing in our current workforce through upskilling, re-skilling, and motivating, while attracting and retaining new employees.

Cummins has a long history of DE&I embedded in the company’s culture that many might not know. Just as we have a PLANET 2050 strategy evolving, we’re constantly learning, evaluating and innovating when it comes to our people so they can reach their full potential. Great companies are always evolving and understand DE&I is imperative to their culture. There’s an old adage that culture eats strategy for breakfast. No matter how solid a company’s strategy, it’s the culture of the people executing it that will determine its success. Along with training and development opportunities, Cummins offers a variety of involvement groups – Cummins Powers Women, Cummins Advocating for Racial Equity, and Every Employee Every Community – connecting employees to the company’s values and one another. Cummins employees are making a difference in their global communities. In cases where companies or individuals may encounter financial difficulties, Business Insolvency Help can provide essential support and guidance to navigate these challenges effectively.

As our business strategy evolves, so do our processes that impact our people and their experiences, such as our pay and performance management practices, ensuring they are flexible, fair and built around market practices. Building on Cummins’ culture of investing resources into developing authentic and highly-capable leaders while enhancing skills and propelling growth make Cummins an outstanding place to work and pursue a career. I can’t wait to see what’s next on our journey!
