Melvin D. Williams is President of Nicor Gas. In this role, Williams is responsible for ensuring that natural gas – a clean, safe, reliable and affordable energy source – reaches more than 2.2 million homes and businesses in 656 northern Illinois communities. Williams also serves as Senior Vice President of Southern Company Gas.
In his more than 30 years with Southern Company Gas, Williams has increased his depth of knowledge in all facets of natural gas utility distribution through roles within numerous areas of the company, including sales and new business development, regulatory affairs, utility operations and financial planning and analysis.
A champion for leadership, diversity and inclusion, Williams is the Founding Chairman of the Illinois Utilities Business Diversity Council and a member of the American Association of Blacks in Energy, Chicago chapter.
He serves on the Board of Directors for United Way of Metropolitan Chicago; the Board of Trustees for The Field Museum of Chicago; and is a Hall of Fame inductee of the Frank Callen Boys & Girls Club of Savannah and the Boys & Girls Club of Georgia.
Williams earned his Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Savannah State University.
