LaToya C. Merritt is an innovative community leader and Partner in the Jackson, MS Office of Phelps Dunbar, LLP.

Merritt serves as a trusted counselor on all facets of employment and personnel management, and has spent the last 15 years conducting diversity training throughout Phelps’ regional footprint.

Merritt has trained hundreds of executives and managers on diversity, inclusion, equity, corporate transparency, and personnel management issues.

Merritt has handled some of Mississippi’s most high-profile employment and constitutional law cases and has been recognized as a Leader in Law and as one of Mississippi’s 50 Leading Business Women by The Mississippi Business Journal. She is especially proud of her decade of service as General Counsel to The Piney Woods School, the nation’s oldest African American boarding school.

Additionally, Merritt serves as Chair of the firm’s Diversity Committee and is committed to cultivating firm-wide awareness of today’s diversity issues and creating innovative solutions to achieve equitable resolutions.

Merritt is a past Fellow of the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity. She is a proud graduate of Grambling State University, where she serves as Vice-President of its Foundation, and North Carolina Central University School of Law.
