James W. Dyke, Jr. was Partner at McGuire Woods LLP. Woods retired after 20 years with the Virginia law firm, where he specialized in corporate, education, voting rights, government relations and municipal law.


Dyke became a Senior Adviser to McGuire Woods Consulting LLC in 2013. In addition to his legal career, Dyke has extensive professional experience in government and public relations. Among other appointments, Dyke served as Secretary of Education for the Commonwealth of Virginia from 1990 to 1993 and as Domestic Policy Adviser to former Vice President Walter Mondale.


Dyke was included in Washingtonian Magazine’s list of “150 Most Powerful People” in the Washington region.


Dyke holds a Bachelor of Arts degree and Juris Doctor from Howard University. In addition, Dyke holds Honorary degrees from St. Paul’s College, Virginia State University, the University of Richmond, Randolph-Macon College and the Northern Virginia Community College.
