Michael is an experienced private investor, board member and senior executive officer. He is currently the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the Maryland State Retirement and Pension System (System), one of the largest public pension funds and global institutional investors in the U.S. serving more than 425,000 beneficiaries with approximately $70 billion in assets under management.
Michael previously served as a Board Trustee for the System. During his tenure as a Trustee, he held several key positions, including Investment Committee Chair, a historic achievement. He also served as the Objective Criteria (Investment Division Compensation) Committee Chair, Audit Committee Vice-Chair, and Member of the Corporate Governance and Securities Litigation Committee. He also represented the System as an elected member to the Board of Directors of the Council of Institutional Investors, a global nonpartisan association of U.S. public, corporate and union employee benefit pension funds with combined assets under management of approximately $5 trillion.
Michael is also qualified to chair an Audit Committee of a public company as a SEC Financial Expert.
Michael founded the MJH Group in 1998 and is the Managing Member of the private investment and management consulting firm. He leads the firm by providing governance, risk management, operational oversight and serves as Investment Committee Chair.
Before founding the MJHG, Michael worked in the Division of Corporation Finance for the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. In this role, he performed compliance reviews of multinational companies’ SEC filings in various industries that ranged in size from small cap to Fortune Global 500.
Prior to joining the SEC’s Division of Corporation Finance, he led several high-profile audit engagements on the High Technology Business Assurance Team for PricewaterhouseCoopers.
Michael is a Centennial Society Member with the Economic Club of New York where he also serves on its Membership & Centennial Society Committee. He is a Founding Advisory Board Member of the Center for Security and Emerging Technology which is a part of Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service. Michael is also a Member of the Foreign Policy Association.
Michael’s business and economic insights were utilized as an Advisor to the White House Business Council during the Obama Administration.
Michael is a Certified Public Accountant and Member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from Morgan State University.
