Delano E. Lewis was the United States Ambassador to the Republic of South Africa. Prior to his diplomatic roles, Lewis was Vice President of Chesapeake & Potomoc (C&P), a Bell Atlantic Corporation from January 1988 to January 1993.


Lewis started his career in the government in 1963 as an Attorney with the U.S. Department of Justice. Lewis served as President and Chief Executive Officer at National Public Radio Corporation (NPR) from January 1994 to August 1998. Lewis was U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of South Africa from December 1999 to July 2001.


Lewis is a Member of the International Advisory Council at APCO Worldwide, Inc. and President of Greater Washington Board of Trade. Lewis serves as Chairman of United Way Campaign, D.C. Youth Employment Advisory Council.


Lewis holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Kansas, a Juris Doctor from Washburn School of Law, and Honorary degrees from George Washington University and Marymount University.
