Oprah Winfrey assisted the front-runner in the Democratic primary for New Jersey Senate earn funds while his opponents participated in an NAACP debate.
Winfrey joined contender Cory Booker in Jersey City for the fundraiser, where sponsors paid between $1,000 and $2,600 per person.
While Booker was fundraising at his event, the other three candidates competing against him were in Newark answering questions from the audience about Social Security, Medicare and civil rights issues.
Newark NAACP President Deborah Gregory said it would have been wonderful if Booker had come to the forum with Winfrey.
Booker’s Democratic opponents criticized him for fundraising opposed to participating in the question and answer forum. However, a Booker spokesman admitted that the fundraiser was scheduled in advanced before the campaign was invited to participate in the forum.
The candidates are competing for the seat of the late Sen. Frank Lautenberg.
