First Black Woman to Win World Swimming Title

This weekend the record was changed when Alia Atkinson, 25 years old, won a gold metal during the 12th FINA World Swimming Championships in Doha, Qatar. Alia swam the Women’s 100 Breaststroke with a new record time of 1 minute and 2.36 seconds. It is said that even Atkinson was surprised at her own win and could not believe what she had done.

Alia Atkinson is from and swims for the Jamaican team. She is a graduate of Texas A&M University and is the first black woman to hold this title.
